Wicked Surrender by Jade Lee

I first ran into Jade Lee at RT. If you've ever met this talented lady, you won't forget her. In a sea of trembling introverts (which pretty much describes most writers), she's the one most likely to be dancing on a table. You never have to wonder what Jade is thinking. She'll tell you. It's part of what I love about her. I think you'll love her too.

Take it away, Jade!

Well, since Emily and I are such good pals, I'm going to put her on the spot! Ready? Okay, Emily, back at RWA nationals in Orlando, our keynote speaker Jayne Ann Krentz told us to know what our core story is. In other words, what is the story that always seems to appeal to you as a writer? Or even as a reader? So...Emily!! Did you think about it? Do you know?

Emily: Yeah, if someone didn't know me, based on my books, they'd think I was a repressed, oversexed bluestocking with daddy issues. But enough about me. Today is all about you, girlfriend.

I puzzled over it for a while, but eventually I realized that I just love giving my heroine the choice between two good but very different men. As in, would you choose security with a man who loves you or passion with the man who doesn't? An easier life as a respectable woman or an exciting life of topsy turvy adrenaline in the moment?

I think it all harks back to my college romance where I had two guys, um...men, who were interested in me. The first was Simon who was a fellow extrovert. Being with him was exciting, passionate, and a huge roller coaster ride of exhausting fun/pain. The other was David who was like coming home to hot chocolate cookies and settling in for a nice night of good television. He was warm and accepting, and I was never more peaceful than when I was with him. In the end, I picked David and have never regretted the choice. But sometimes I wonder if Simon and I could have sustained something lasting. I think not. We were too hot as it was, and after just a couple months the lows were getting bad. Still, it's fun to remember those wild college nights!

The heroine of my new historical WICKED SURRENDER has just that choice. Respectable marriage with a sweet man. (Well, in his case, he's really more of a boy). And passion with someone who loves her with a kind of madness, whose touch excites her, and who is not offering marriage. Here's the book trailer.

So tell me what you think! Have you ever faced a choice like this? One lucky commentor will get a Jade Lee book!

  1. Nope, can't say I ever have faced such a choice.

I only ever dated one man. We've been married almost 8 years now. ^_^

  2. Oh, just realised that I had commented on facebook too since I subscribe to facebook notes updates and to this blog. Thanks Emily.

As I said on facebook, I think this is a very interesting premise .. (and now expanding) It would be a hard choice but I think there's such a thing as burning too bright, too quickly. If it's a long term relationship, I think sustainability should be a consideration and relationships change over time.

  3. I should be so lucky as to have that choice, but alas, no I haven't.

  4. Tura Lura--Sounds like you got lucky on the first try!

  5. Daz--I remember hearing an old saying once, something about cooking on simmer being better than turning the pot on high and boiling over. Seems appropriate.

  6. Linda--I sort of did have that choice. My HS boyfriend and I weren't translating well to a college relationship, so I found myself quietly looking around.

I had noticed the man who would become my DH and another guy at about the same time, and to further muddle matters, they had the same first name. And both had sent me strong signals of interest.

The other guy was a total extrovert, always the center of attention, very popular. I suspect he's selling something somewhere now. But I was drawn to my DH's quiet confidence, and once I broke it off with my HS boyfriend, I set my cap for the man I eventually married and never looked back.

And don't confuse lack of flash with lack of passion. I'm here to tell you, "Still waters do run deep."

  7. Wow! Interesting choice. Especially in a historical where women didn't have the avenues we do today.
Jade, you've made me curious who she chooses.

  8. Being the practical sort, I chose the quiet, steady type. I've always wondered if it would have lasted any longer had I chosen the wild and crazy one. If not, life would have been AMAZING while it lasted.

Can't remember my password, so alas I'll be anonymous.

  9. Hmm... I'm with a guy whose both flashy and wild and quiet and constant. It's an interesting mix and certainly feels like the best of both worlds :).

I think for me, the story I always like to read best is about two people who are tough on the outside but really desperately need to be loved (and cuddled, and what have you). When they get together, I usually sigh with relief and sometimes yell 'finally!' out loud :).

  10. I met my ideal guy when I was 14, and told my uncle (who'd introduced us) I'd marry him someday. While I dated in school, I never forgot him. And, 11 days out of school I did marry him. Everyone said, "It won't last." Well, it's been 58 years...and counting. :-)

  11. What a fun book trailer!

I had a choice and picked the man who made my toes curl. 22 years and counting, so...so far, so good. :)

  12. I have never had to face that kind of a choice! But the mad love definitely sounds nice ;-)

  13. Interesting dilemma to reflect on.
I applaud all you who made the right choice the first time.

I did have a choice, way back in college. I dated a fellow I had a lot in common with but was too 'comfortable.' The more exciting one I married turned out to be the wrong choice.

But I was wiser, years later, the second time around :)

  14. Hello everyone! So sorry to be joining the party late. We're traveling-taking the youngest to college-and someone *cough-me-cough* forgot the phone charger.

Tura Lura--Dating only one man! That's awesome. Glad you found your HEA so fast.

  15. Hi Daz-relationships definitely do change over time. I think as people change and grow so do the relationships we're in.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  18. Hey Chelsea and Mrsshukra--Does that mean you haven't had to make the choice yet or that the decision was easy for you?

Hi Barb-I'm glad the second time is working out better.

Thanks so much everyone for coming by. I'll be back in a few!

  19. Thanks for having the get-together, Emily.

Love your work, Jade. Hope you liked the review I did for PaperbackDolls.com, because I really liked your writing style and your wild imagination.

I enjoyed meeting both of you at RT. My TBR list has expanded a lot since I've added your books to the stack. Gee, thanks....no, really, thanks. LOL

  20. What a choice to make. I married a bad boy extrovert, but it turned out he was loyal, steady and a great provider. Smile.

  21. Emily, I totally agree with you about still waters running deep. My DH is a total introvert but extremely passionate about the things he cares about.

  22. Mona--Glad you could join this get together. I'm tickled to be on your TBR list. Are you going to LA next April for RT?

  25. Hi Mona, I LOVED the review you did. Thank you! You're a sweetie.

Did you turn that bad boy around, Sandy? ;)

Emily-thanks so much for having me!

I'll pop in again tomorrow and we'll draw a name out of the hat for a winner!

  26. Sounds like a terrific core story. I too had this sort of "choice" if you could call it that. I've never regretted sticking with my solid, dependable, best friend hero/husband.

The other one would have resulted in my third divorce or first suicide!

  29. Jade, I love your books and can't wait to read WICKED SURRENDER!

Given the choice between a super nice guy and a bad boy who drove me wild, every single time I've gone for the bad boy--without regrets, including my husband, who turned out to be both. ;)
