I missed Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Doggone it! What with all the excitement over A CHRISTMAS BALL, I completely missed International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th.

What? You've never heard of Talk Like a Pirate Day? Say it ain't so! It's the day when everyone can talk like a pirate and get away with it.

What? You don't know how to talk like a pirate? Well, I'd hate to see you be mistaken for a scurvy lubber, so here's my little pirate lexicon.

Ahoy! ~ "Hello!"

Avast! ~ "Hey!" "Stop!" "No way!"

Aye ~ "Yes, I most heartily agree."

Aye aye! ~ "Absolutely, I'll see to it as soon as I finish my nap."

Arrr ~ Can mean "yes," "I'm happy." or "Great beer!" Not to be confused with "Aarg!" (which is the sound you make when you accidentally sit on the sharp pointy end of an anchor!)

Beauty ~ Pirate word for a wench, always preceded by 'me,' as in "Why are ye walkin' away, me beauty?"

Bilge rat ~ A first rate insult, as in "Belay that racket, ye smarmy bilge rat." The bilge is the lowest deck of the ship, usually filled with slimy water. Of course, if someone made me stay in the bilge, I'd make a racket too!

Grog ~ Watered rum. Since water onboard was stored in slimy wooden barrels, it was usually anything but fresh. Grog helped kill the rancid taste. And several thousand brain cells.

Hornpipe ~ A single reed flute and the wild dance usually done to its music. Not to be confused with the pirate pick up line, "No, me beauty, that's not a hornpipe in me pocket. I really am happy to see ye!"

Keelhaul ~ A really horrible way to spend an afternoon. Pirates who violated one of the articles (rules they all voted on and agreed to before the voyage began) might be punished by being tied to a rope that ran under the keel of the ship. The offender was shoved into the water on one side of the ship, dragged against the barnacled-covered hull and hauled out on the other. Rinse, and repeat.

Lubber ~ An insulting word for a landsman. No one wants to be a lubber.

Smartly ~ To do something quickly. As in "Nip down to the bookstore smartly and pick up your copy of PLEASURING THE PIRATE so you'll be ready when Talk Like A Pirate Day comes next year!"

PS. Today is my regular posting day over at The Chatelaines. Hope you'll visit me there too!

Carpe Diem!

Over last weekend, my DH and I took my parents to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for my cousin's wedding on the beach. It was a lovely setting, much different from the beaches of Florida or Hawaii! The coastal island beaches are lined with dunes covered with low growing shrubs and salt grass.

Wild ponies, the descendants of shipwrecked Spanish horses, roam freely. It is against the law to feed them or even to approach closer than 50 feet so they'll remain wild. White egrets perch on their backs to keep them free of insects, a neat little symbiotic relationship.

The wedding was held on a remote portion of the beach only accessible by four wheel drive. It was a "shoes optional" affair, very intimate and lovely. I felt blessed to be there.

My DH and I lived in North Carolina, in the Piedmont area, for 11 years. And in all that time, we never made it to the Outer Banks. The DH was working for USAir at the time, so when we wanted to go to the beach, we hopped a plane and went to Florida, using his flight benefits. By doing so, we missed some of the wonders closer at hand, always thinking we'd do the Outer Banks later.

We left NC in 1996. Later took its time in coming.

Now I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't wait when we want to do something. Take that trip. Tell the people who are important to you how much they mean to you. Make peace with any you're in conflict with. Surround yourself with the people and things that make you happy. Don't wait. Later may not come.

As my uncle from Tennessee says, "It's time to start using the good china."

Is there anything you've been putting off that you want to do?

Adele DuBois' Desert Nectar

Today's post is from my long-suffering friend, Adele Dubois. I've been so scatterbrained the past few weeks with the 12 Days of a A CHRISTMAS BALL blog tour, finishing up STROKE OF GENIUS (coming June 2010) and my parents coming for a two week visit that I missed getting Adele's post up not once, but TWICE! And yet, she's still speaking to me, bless her heart!

Take it away, Adele!

Some of us visit family and friends on week-ends, host dinner parties, or go to sporting events. With two new releases this month, I’ve spent my week-ends learning to make book videos. After several teeth-grinding, perspired, nerve-wracking hours I finally had that “ah-hah” moment when everything made sense and my book trailers started coming together. Best of all, I began having fun! I created three book videos—one for my new e-book release REV ME UP, a hot and spicy contemporary romance, one for my paranormal romance DESERT NECTAR in trade paperback, and another that featured all six of my Ellora’s Cave titles.

My author pal Emily Bryan has been gracious enough to post one of my book videos to celebrate the release of DESERT NECTAR, the print compilation of my ebooks DESERT FEVER and DESERT WILD. The background song is entitled Bring It On Home by Little Big Town and it’s one of my favorite Country songs. What do you think of my song choice and first attempt at video production?

DESERT WILD by Adele Dubois (From DESERT NECTAR)

“The erotic moments are incredibly well-written. An all-around great read.” ~ Reader Views

Summary:

Sonny Wild Horse of the Tohono O’odham Nation is a danger to a woman’s heart. Though he lusts after Caitlyn Spencer, his desire to live inside two conflicting worlds—the Sonoran Desert of his youth and the California coast where his future as a photographer is assured—tears the lovers apart.

When Sonny disappears inside America’s most hostile desert, Caitlyn borrows a unique Thunderbird convertible and embarks on a desperate search. The car is equipped with a powerful but endearingly kinky GPS navigator that grants wishes. Though not exactly a genie, “Guy’s” system locates whatever his driver needs most.
And Caitlyn needs to connect erotically with Sonny. Again and again. If only she can find him in time.

What Marybeth doesn’t know is that her GPS navigator has led her straight to the man she wished for to heal her broken heart. Though the GPS is not exactly a genie, his system grants him the power to locate whatever Marybeth needs most. What she wants is revenge, laced with a hot, studly young lover. Katie O

When one of my New England Chapter RWA chapter mates popped up on our writers' loop wondering what she should do to promote her debut book, I told her the first thing she had to do was come guest on my blog. (And bless her heart, she listened to me!)
Katie O'Sullivan is here with us today to share her exciting paranormal UNFOLDING THE SHADOWS. As usual when I have a guest, my words will be in bold and my guest will be in regular type.

Unfolding the Shadows Blurb:
Jillian has worked hard to close the doors on her past and the psychic abilities that defined her youth. For sixteen years, she’s ignored the ghosts who still try to whisper to her. Even her controlling husband Kyle has no idea that his wife can talk to spirits. But on the day after Christmas, her great aunt’s car smashes head-on with a commuter train and Jillian finds herself on a collision course with ghosts who refuse to remain in the shadows any longer.

Long-hidden secrets are coming to light and Jillian’s life has to change to accommodate them. With the help of her friends and a substantial inheritance, she sets her life in a new direction, but Kyle’s not about to lose out on his share of Jillian’s inheritance—even if he has to kill her to get it.

Unfolding the Shadows excerpt:

As she entered the living room, she felt the distinct crackle of psychic energy run through her body. The soothing scent of lavender water wafted through the room and Jillian was enveloped by a familiar sense of ease. She scanned the empty room, searching.

“Grandma?” she whispered with slight disbelief. She felt rather than heard the reply as a comforting energy settled around her. Jillian relaxed slowly onto her mother’s couch, careful not to spill her wine.

As a child she had conversed with spirits easily, an ability her mother had taken advantage of in her holistic healing practice. Her grandmother had been Jillian’s guide, coming to her when she was troubled. That all seemed so far in the past and yet the knowledge came flooding back into Jillian’s mind.

“Grandma,” Jillian repeated, “I know you’re here. Can you show yourself to me? I need you.”

A silvery shadow began to manifest beside her on the couch, gaining strength as Jillian watched. “I’m here, Jill dear. I’ve been here all along,” floated the soft voice that Jillian remembered.

Jillian could make out the outline of a woman’s form, then her grandmother’s features slowly came into focus. Her expression was one of both patience and infinite sadness, so sad that Jillian felt the weight of it as if it were physical.

“What is troubling you, my dear?” asked the shimmering being.

1. Tell us about Unfolding the Shadows. What inspired the story?

I’ve been fascinated by ghost stories and mysteries since I was young, from my first Nancy Drew mystery through all the Agatha Christie novels I borrowed from my mom’s shelf. I’m also a big fan of television shows like Medium and True Blood, where the main characters have psychic abilities.

My heroine is Jillian Greene, who had been a psychic and medium when she was a child but decided she wanted to be “normal” teenager. As the story begins, Jillian has been ignoring the spirit world for sixteen years, never even telling her husband about her psychic abilities. Events unfold that force her to reopen that part of herself.

2. Tell us something interesting about you. How long have you been writing? Did you always know you wanted to?

Doesn’t every author say “I always wanted to be a writer”?

I’ve been writing on and off since college, and held many different jobs that used my writing talents, from writing press releases for a PR firm to covering high school football for local newspapers. After my second child was born, I wrote a newspaper column titled “Couch Potato Corner,” where I reviewed videos and books. I didn’t get out of the house much that entire year between the new baby and his two-year-old brother, so reading and watching videos were right up my alley!

When we moved to Cape Cod, I got serious about writing fiction. I joined a few writing groups, including the New England chapter of the Romance Writers of America. It’s great to meet fellow writers and be able to ask questions of people who’ve already survived the publishing process. And the most important thing I’ve learned is to keep at it. Don’t let the rejections get you down.

3. Writers always have more than one iron in the fire. What are you working on now?The manuscript I’m polishing right now is a middle-grade story I wrote for my children, about the mermaids who live near Cape Cod. The fate of the Atlantic rests with a farmboy from Oklahoma who can’t even swim, and who doesn’t know his mother is really a mermaid…

I’ve started another suspense story about Jillian and her ghost whispering, and this time I think she and her love interest will have a chance to turn up the heat in their relationship. Gotta put those romance writing classes to good use!

Helter-Skelter Thursday!

Hey! I had a surprise today. My cousin from MO called and was in Boston! So we had a mini-fam reunion with her and my parents. Now I'm packing madly for our trip to the Outer Banks tomorrow and just to keep things crazy, I'm blogging at Adele DuBois' site today!

I'd love to hear from YOU!
