Friday Odds and Ends

Even though I was gone for a while visiting my family, I discovered I was also still out and about on the web. Barbara Vey of Publishers Weekly gave STROKE OF GENIUS a delightful push on her blog Beyond Her Book . If you haven't bookmarked this blog, I encourage you to do so. Barb always has something fresh to share. Here are some highlights from the blog:

"Emily Bryan does it again. Stroke of Genius sparkles and crackles with whip sharp dialog and characters to cheer for. Historicals have never been such fun."

RomCon begins today in Denver. I sincerely wish I could make this conference, but I'm 10 pages behind in my current WIP and can't spare the time away. My novella in A CHRISTMAS BALL, My Lady Below Stairs is up for their prestigious Reader's Crown Award. Just being nominated is an incredible honor, especially since the rest of the field in my category includes talent like Jade Lee, Erin McCarthy, Sophia Nash and Courtney Milan.

I was blogging at the RomCon site yesterday and will be giving away a signed copy of STROKE OF GENIUS to a commenter. I'm not sure when the site will close the contest, so please pop over right away and let me know you were there.

I'd like to wish you all a belated Happy 4th of July. It's my dad's birthday and we had a grand time celebrating it with him. This snarky little pic is my oldest daughter, making fun of the fact that I used to make her and her her sister wear oven mitts to do sparklers when they were little. You may laugh, but I got them both to majority with all their fingers intact!

Hope you're having a wonderful summer filled with "take me away" beach reads. I'm just starting Sabrina Jeffries' THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD STONEVILLE.

What's on your bedside table?

Happy Friday, Emily! I'm deep in freak-out mode about everything that needs to be done before Nationals--of course dh just got a last minute work contract and so will be gone at the same time. I think I'll save my reading for when I come home.

Cute picture! My kids just laugh at this point when I say "be careful!"

I'm both happy and sad not to be going to Nationals this year. Happy, because I really need the writing days if I'm going to meet my deadlines without sending myself to the loony bin. And sad because I won't be able to cheer you on for the Golden Heart. Best of luck!

On my bedside table is Highlander Ever After by Jennifer Ashley. Adore her books! And The Truth About Lord Stoneville is fantastic :-)

Thanks, Chelsea. I always enjoy Sabrina too.

Anything by Jennifer Ashley is terrific!

Hi, Emily. I haven't had much time to read this week because I took a class. (Writers' Workshop for Grades 3-5). I'm borrowing one of your ideas. I took your online workshop title and am going to make a poster for the kids that will say something like---"Hooking your readers..." I'll have a fish hook and worms with some hook statements and will let the kids also add worms to the hook. So, thanks! I hope you don't mind. If so, let me know and I won't use it.

I did pick up Patricia Rice's new book, THE WICKED WYKERLY. I haven't opened it yet, but hope to do so later today. I've got SOG waiting behind the counter for me at my little indie bookstore I frequent. :)

Deb--That's terrific! I'm glad you can use hooks with your kids. Your worms reminded me of when I taught 2nd grade and made a "bookworm." Each time one of my students completed an extra credit book, I'd print the title and the student's name on a new circular segment. The kids loved to see the worm grow as they read. By the end of the year, the worm looped the whole room on the walls along the ceiling.

Saw you on RomCon. I am between books at the moment trying to decide which one to pull out of the stack. It might be THE FORBIDDEN ROSE by Joanna Bourne. I've not read anything by her before.

RomCon in Denver appeals. It seems to be geared for readers and is affordable. Denver is a favorite spot we would love to go back to. If I decide to go, we'll plan a week or two trip and my husband can play golf or visit friends while I attend the conference.

Pat--RomCon definitely holds some appeal, not the least of which is that it's sponsored by Borders. If I hadn't had the writing deadlines, I'd have been there this year. There were tons of big name authors at this conference. All my faves.
