B&B Getaway

My DH and I went up to Maine last weekend. I was speaking to the Maine RWA on Saturday, so we decided to make a weekend of it. We'd never stayed at a B & B before, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

At first I wondered if I'd feel strange staying in the home of someone I didn't know. But our hosts made us feel very welcome. So did their cat Pooh. It's unusual to be greeted by a cat, but Pooh did.

The house was built in 1862 and is reportedly haunted. There have been sightings in the room we occupied, but we didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Fortunately, we weren't told about the resident ghost until the last morning. A writer's imagination needs only the tiniest of nudges, you know. Apparently, several visitors have seen a diaphanous male figure in the room, sometimes hovering above the female visitor's side of the bed.

I have no ghost story to share, but maybe you do. Have you ever seen something inexplicable?

Nope, no ghosts seen by me but my sister did wake me up once when I was little insisting that there was a strange man in the kitchen wearing my mother's red apron...turned out it was just mom's red apron tied to the white refrigerator's door....not sure why she thought she saw someone but I figured it was just being awake in the middle of the night...lol

A ghost sighting would pretty much guarantee I'd be sleeping in the car. Brave I am not.

But wow do I envy your time in Maine. Such a beautiful state.

Sometimes our eyes can play tricks on us. Our ears too. When our oldest daughter was born, I was sure I heard the rocking chair creaking in the living room. In a panic, I woke my DH. It turned out to be the baby's wheezing breath in the little crib beside our bed. I just wasn't used to having her there and, being sleep-deprived, I couldn't identify the new sound.

Gillian, I'd be right there with you. I'm not big on things that go bump in the night. You'd have to tie me up and tape open my eyes to make me watch a horror flick.

Our house has ghosts. I have felt a presence but not seen anything. Our son woke up one night when he was about 12 to see a young girl standing next to his bed. Our middle daughter, however, has had several experiences and the only bad ones.
We have an 1898 farm house with a new addition off the back. She was house sitting for us with her baby. She never felt comfortable in the old part of the house, so she was in the family room in the addition. She got up for the baby in the wee hours of the morning. While she was standing at the crib, she had the feeling someone was staring at her and it felt threatening. She turned toward the hall leading to the old part of the house and saw a green cloud starting to take shape. Now, you might say it was her imagination, but our lab was sleeping on the floor near the crib. When our daughter noticed the "green whatever" the dog started growling, every hair on her back went up, and she headed for that hallway. Just before she got there, the green whatever vanished. The dog stopped in her tracks and turned around and came back to her spot. I don't think she has stayed here since, but her son sleeps in the old part of the house all the time.
I met someone who had live in our house years ago and she asked me if I'd seen the white lady. Another ghost. Evidently she appears on the upstairs landing when someone is going to die. Our son claims he saw her the night before our cat died.
When we lived in Norther VA, there were very many reports of weird things going on with ghosts, spirits, and other unexplained events.

When it's time to buy a different home, we always opt for new for just this reason. Call me cowardly, but I'd rather not meet Casper or any of his scarier friends.
